No longer just a scarf, countless creative ideas of showing off these art pieces have been shared over the years, e.g. framed and hung as home decor, several ways of converting it into various fashionable tops and skirts, neckties, belts.
Since 1937, the silk scarves of French fashion house, Hermès, has become an iconic fashion accessory that is recognized all over the world. Hermès scarves and shawls have been collected and adorned by celebrities and royals throughout history, from Audrey Hepburn to Grace Kelly and even Queen Elizabeth II.Â
Renowned artists are commissioned each year to create elaborate artworks with bright, vibrant color combinations. An individual scarf typically integrates 20 to 30 different hues, each printed from a unique silkscreen process that can take hundreds of hours to complete. Each one is painstakingly screen-printed, with each color allowed to dry before the next is applied. These art pieces have proved to be timeless collectable pieces of history.
DESIGN HISTORY:
Claude Monet, one of the Impressionist movementâs foremost exponents, moved with his family to Giverny in Normandy, in 1883. The garden he created there over many years was more than a source of inspiration â it was a work of art in its own right. Visiting in 1907, Marcel Proust wrote of the âdelicate water lilies depicted by the master in sublime canvases for which this garden [â¦] is a kind of living, preparatory sketch." Christine Henry was invited to this exceptional place, today the Museum of Impressionism, for the creation of this carré. This composition is inspired not only by the infinitely rich colors of the gardenâs flowers, but also by Monetâs carefully planned arrangement of forms, harmonies, shadows and reflections. From the gentle curve of the Japanese gardenâs bridges and the broad paths of the walled Normandy garden, to the soaring verticals of the bamboo and the delicate leaves of the weeping willow, motifs from the ceramics decorating Monetâs kitchen and kimonos evoking his fascination with Japanese art are surrounded by the geometry of flower beds and waterfalls. This carré is a tribute from the House of Hermès to an artistâs garden, and to the Foundation that ensures it lives on today.
