Hermes Harnais de Cour ScarfÂ
No longer just a scarf, countless creative ideas of showing off these art pieces have been shared over the years, e.g. framed and hung as home decor, several ways of converting it into various fashionable tops and skirts, neckties, belts.
Since 1937, the silk scarves of French fashion house, Hermès, has become an iconic fashion accessory that is recognized all over the world. Hermès scarves and shawls have been collected and adorned by celebrities and royals throughout history, from Audrey Hepburn to Grace Kelly and even Queen Elizabeth II.Â
Renowned artists are commissioned each year to create elaborate artworks with bright, vibrant color combinations. An individual scarf typically integrates 20 to 30 different hues, each printed from a unique silkscreen process that can take hundreds of hours to complete. Each one is painstakingly screen-printed, with each color allowed to dry before the next is applied. These art pieces have proved to be timeless collectable pieces of history.
Design History:
Two horses have trotted off leaving their harnesses behind... Outstanding craftsmen put all their skills into making these ceremonial harnesses regularly used in France until the mid-19th century but afterwards reserved for sovereigns and galas. In the days when French was the language of the court in many European countries, harnesses of the court were referred to as âà la françaiseâ. How could it be otherwise? Manes plaited with silk or trimmed with velvet ribbons decorated with tassels and embroidery called palatine, metal or braid rosettes, gleaming blinkers, leather hand-sewn by master saddlers⦠It is easy to imagine how fine they looked in their caparisons, led by men who watched over their gait and their passengers â grooms, postilions and other helpers. Decked in cloth, metal and leather, every step echoed with the lively clap of horseshoes on the ground and the tinkling of buckles engraved with the familyâs arms. By two, six or eight, great attention was paid to the horsesâ appearance for every one of these outings!
